How do you become known? Who are your known as? Do you control your reputation?

Take control of your image thru Public Relations with McGraw.

The goal of public relations by a company often is to convince the public, investors, partners, employees, and other stakeholders to maintain a certain point of view about it, its leadership, products, or of political viewpoints.

Public Relations is the professional maintenance of a favorable public image by a company or other organization or a famous person.

Public relations is often looked down on by the media and consumers. However, any company, especially those that have stock, has to take control of their reputation and maintain their image.

It is only thru a good public relations management team that this objective can be realized.

Positive or Negative PR

The primary function of Public Relations is to build a beneficial relationship with the public.

Media Representation. Representing a company or individual to the media is one of the more well-known functions of public relations. The Princeton Review notes that: “A public relations specialist is an image shaper. Their job is to generate positive publicity for their client and enhance their reputation … They keep the public informed about the activity of government agencies, explain policy, and manage political campaigns. Public relations people working for a company may handle consumer relations, or the relationship between parts of the company such as the managers and employees, or different branch offices.”

Author and digital media expert David Meerman Scott (“The New Rules of Marketing & PR”) preaches speed and relevance.  Scott recommends these actions:  “Blog your take on the news,” “Tweet it using an established hashtag,” “Send a real-time media alert,” “Hold a live or virtual news conference” and “Directly contact a journalist who might be interested.”

Understanding Public Relations

Although not inherent in the definition, PR is often thought of as “spin,” with the goal being to present the person, company, or brand in the best light possible. PR differs from advertising in that PR attempts to represent a person or brand’s image in ways that will appear organic, such as generating good press from independent sources and recommending business decisions that will incur public support.

Loosely defined until the mid-twentieth century, PR is one of the fastest-growing industries in the United States.
